The phenomena of gravel biking is growing around the world, and Sweden is not to be left behind. Here both larger destinations and smaller campsites are choosing to promote the beauty of biking on gravel through forests.
In the middle of Jämtland Härjedalen there is a camp site called Österåsens camping. It will pop up when you travel along the road E45 towards Strömsund (or Östersund going south). It’s a smaller campsite with nice meandering hills and a small pond to swim and play in. This year they’ve added on to their attractions by sign posting the gravel roads in the area.
The area around Österåsen is sparsly populated by humans but rich in wildlife. The gravel routes takes you to several places frequently visited by moose and beavers. There are also beautiful places to stop and have a packed lunch or a Swedish fika. The area is also rich in remnants of old moose traps used over a hundred years ago, and pastures with old huts previously used for summer farming.
The roads are bikable with most types of bikes. You need to bring your own since there isn’t any rental in the area yet. If you have that sorted it’s worth it to enjoy a day or two in the area and explore the magic of Jämtlands fortests.
Below you’ll find more areas to explore from the saddle.
