Road Trips in Jämtland Härjedalen – A Journey to the Swedish Mountains
Jämtland Härjedalen is roughly the size of the Netherlands. The best way to experience as much as possible during your holiday is therefore to explore the region by road trip. A journey through this part of Sweden offers scenic routes with everything from majestic mountains and fast-paced cycling to searching for “the Great Lake Monster, (Storsjöodjuret)” visiting picturesque farm shops, and traveling back in time at local open air museums.
Plan a road trip to northern Jämtland for a “mountain hike on four wheels” through the Sámi cultural landscape along the famous Wilderness Road (Vildmarksvägen). Alternatively, head toward the destinations of beautiful Härjedalen for a scenic tour filled with world-class hiking and cycling trails.
For those who prefer to leave the car behind, there is the option of a rail trip across Sweden to the regional capital, Östersund, and onward to Scandinavia’s largest ski resort Åre or the classic mountain resort Storlien. You might even choose to continue your train journey across the border to Trondheim, Norway.
