The Wilderness road – Silence outside and warmth within

There are no large ski resort along the Wilderness Road (Vildmarksvägen in Swedish), only small cozy villages filled with friendly souls who are happy to welcome you with open arms. Visit Norråker and experience winter life in the countryside or join for a multi-day trip through white expanses with Nordic Husky Farm. Pamper yourself and your loved one at the cozy hotel in Stora Blåsjön or at the spa at STF Björkvattnet. In Stora Blåsjön you will also find one of the region’s longest alpine ski slopes, 3.5 km long. Also unique is Frostviken’s freeride area for snowmobiles, where you can roam freely in large areas with a day pass.

The entire Wilderness Road, including the section over Stekenjokk, is open during the bare ground period between June 6th and October 15th. During the winter you can drive to the mountain plateau Stekenjokk on the Jämtland side as far as to Stora Blåsjön and a little further to the barrier. From the Vilhelmina side you can drive to Klimpfjäll and a little further where there is another barrier. It is the orange-red section over Stekenjokk on the map that is closed in winter, due to the risk of snow drifts.

Dog sledding along the Wilderness Road

At Nordic Husky Farm you will learn all about taking care of sled dogs. Here at Katerina and Jachym there are over 50 huskies who are eager to become your friends. You can choose between staying on the farm and just cuddling with the dogs, going on a shorter training trip with a dog sled or if you are feeling really adventurous there are also multi-day trips further into the roadless country parallel to the Wilderness Road.

Live winter life in the small, cozy village of Norråker

In Norråker, most people know each other and there is also room for visitors. Become part of the community and rent a house in the village, shop at the country store with a completely unique range, including a delicatessen with both local and international cheeses. Join Base Camp Norråker on a horse and sleigh ride through the village, go ice fishing or snowshoe hiking. Go skiing on the village ski trails or take a dog sled ride to feel the wind in your face. You will arrive as a stranger, but you will definitely leave as a friend and neighbor who is welcome again.

Winter Adventure in Gäddede

Happy dogs and excited wagging tails greet you upon arrival at Nordbakks. Sleds are prepared with warm, fluffy reindeer skins, dogs are harnessed, and when it is time to set off on a trip, there is no mistaking the dogs’ joy and enthusiasm before they finally get to do what they love most – pulling!

Then it’s off through a snow-covered landscape, through forests, over bogs and up into the mountains where silence descends and only the dogs’ footsteps and breathing can be heard – and the magic begins. Sparkling snow on the ground and forest in the sunshine or in the dark under the moonlight. Under falling snowflakes or a cold and still day – every day has its charm. Maybe we are lucky enough to see wild animals during the trip. Nature is full of surprises and no trip is the same.

For Nordbakks, the greatest joy lies in seeing the dogs working and being happy and of course the joy on the guests’ faces when they get to experience the adventure with the dogs along the Wilderness Road.

Blåsjön mountain resort with 100% natural snow

You get a uniquely breathtaking view in all directions from the top of Mesklumpen, 924 meters above sea level, before you turn down for a wonderful 3.5 km long descent on the slopes or in untouched loose snow on the side. Here, approximately 475 vertical meters await you before you reach the village of Stora Blåsjön, as Blåsjön’s mountain resort has Sweden’s sixth highest vertical drop. The resort is also considered a real Eldorado for free riders who want to find their own way down to the village, many even compare Blåsjön to alpine greats on the other side of the Atlantic. In 2024, both the Långliften and the Hotelliften were renovated to accommodate more skiers who yearn for the really long runs.
