Storlien – borderless skiing

There are 9 lifts and 23 slopes, a Fun Park, and a Fun Park specifically for children within Storlien’s ski area. The cross-country skiing area is located right by the Hotel and features a total of 38 km of groomed trails. The two choices for the illuminated trails are 2.5 km or 4.5 km and is groomed every morning throughout the winter season. The newly renovated Hotel is one of Sweden’s largest and oldest mountain hotels, with over 200 rooms, restaurants, bars, a gym, a pool, ski rental, and a hairdresser.

Transport

By Air: SAS has direct flights during winter from Copenhagen Denmark to Åre/Östersund Airport, or you can fly to Stockholm Arlanda and on to Åre Östersund airport, 2,5 hours by rental car or taxi from Storlien, or by bus from the airport into the city center of Östersund and train from Östersund to Storlien (the train stops within convinient walking distance from the hotel.

Another option is to fly to Trondheim Vaernes Airport in Norway which is only 1,5 hours by rental car or taxi to Storlien Sweden. There are also trains connecting Trondheim Vaernes Airport with Storlien (1,5 hours).

By train: With SJ, Norrtåg or Snälltåget to Storlien.

By Car: 60o km from Oslo Norway, 700 km from Stockholm Sweden, 900 km from Gothenburg Sweden, 1 155o km from Malmö Sweden. Rental car firms in Jämtland Härjedalen.

Storulvån fjällstation (mountain station)

Storulvån is a mountain station tucked in between the mountain peaks. It is not far from Storlien and a fantastic starting point for families wanting an active outdoors vacation in both summer and winter. The dramatic mountain tops with active reindeer herding shaping nature with not many trees in sight offer Nordic skiing and Ski touring in winter and hiking in summer. There are prepared tracks close to the station for beginners and marked winter trails for the adventurous wanting to make multi day tours skiing from hut to hut in the Swedish mountains. These winter trails can of course be used for day trips as well, bring a lunch pack and a shovel for making your own snow sofa for a magic day out.

Ater a day skiing, return to the mountain station and prepare your own yummy waffles in the restaurant with your choice of toppings and take time to enjoy the sauna. Get prepared for a dinner composed from local specialties like wild meats, mountain fish and local cheese and preservatives.

By train: With SJ, Norrtåg or Snälltåget to Storlien. Storulvån can be reached from the railway station at Enafors or Duved and a pre booked transfer bus to the mountain station. You can book your transfer with STF (The Swedish Tourism Association) when you book your stay.

Fly: Rent a car from Trondheim Værnes Airport or Åre Östersund Airport to Storulvåns fjällstation (mountain station). SAS has direct flights during winter from Copenhagen Denmark to Åre/Östersund Airport.

By car: There is a paved road all the way up to the mountain station. The final 10 km is breath taking! Turn off from road E14 at Enafors and drive towards Handöl, take a right by the sign towards Storulvån. Rental car firms in Jämtland Härjedalen.

Large and small destinations for a ski holiday in Sweden

A large or small ski resort can have different advantages depending on the skiing experience your family desires. A smaller place is more manageable, often with fewer guests and more space in the slopes, as well as peace and quiet when taking the ski lift. If the children are old enough to ski on their own, it is often easy to agree on a central meeting point without worrying about them getting lost. If you’re looking for a wide range of activities besides skiing, then the city of Östersund will suit you. If you’re seeking even smaller, cozy, and affordable options, you might want to consider Kullstabacken in Hammarstrand, which has a nearby hotel and cabins, or Stora Blåsjön in Frostviken, with hotels, cabins, and camping facilities nearby.

A larger ski resort offers more options, more varied skiing, and if your family has completely different preferences for skiing and activities, this can be an advantage, allowing both beginners and experienced skiers to have a really good experience. The larger ski resorts have more facilities, including indoor activities if needed due to the weather. The largest ski resort in Jämtland Härjedalen is Åre, where the areas of Åre Björnen and Duved-Tegefjäll are the most family-friendly. Åre has quite a few restaurants, cafés and nightlife. Vemdalen and Funäsfjällen are two other large ski areas, also with a very wide range of slopes and facilities that cater to both beginners and experienced skiers with a wide selection of restaurants and cafés.
