Western Jämtland – Borderless hiking

Text: Elisabeth Richardsson

Here, in the borderlands toward Norway, wild nature unites with royal glamour, world-class gastronomy, and one of Sweden’s finest interconnected hiking systems.

Summer in western Jämtland

For those who want to experience the mountains on foot, the area around the classic STF mountain stations and cabins is a Swedish hiking icon. Here, you can hike along well-marked trails that connect magnificent mountain massifs, offering accommodation in the heart of the wilderness. Whether you are aiming for a multi-day trek between cabins or using a station as a base for day trips, you are always surrounded by alpine tundra, rushing streams, and the absolute silence that only vast expanses can offer. It is a place where hiking becomes a journey through time in a landscape shaped over millennia.

In the heart of the region lies Storlien, a historic hub currently experiencing a new golden age. Here, you can stay in style at the newly renovated mountain hotel, walk the historic Blomsterstigen (The Flower Path), or hike to the beautiful Brudslöjan (The Bridal Veil) waterfall. The village, a long-time favorite of the Swedish King, offers a charming mix of cross-border shopping and personal experiences. For food lovers, a visit to Flammans Skafferi is a must; here, unique gastronomy is created from scratch using ingredients directly from the nearby forests and farms in Jämtland and Trøndelag. Storlien is simply the perfect base for those who want to experience magnificent mountains.
