The Swedish prescription: Visit Adventure Sweden – Jämtland Härjedalen for the great outdoors in 2026

2026 kicked off with enormous amounts of snow in Adventure Sweden – Jämtland Härjedalen. The ski resort Bydalsfjällen got 1 meter deep powder, a great gift for the guests. The region Jämtland Härjedalen offers new slopes and improved experiences for 2026 with the same good hospitality as before.

Åre Ski Resort has, for example, a new lift, better lighting on a large number of slopes for increased evening skiing and more dining experiences. Vemdalen Ski Resort has a completely new ski system with a nice southerly location adjacent to the existing one at Vemdalsskalet. Along the Wilderness Road you can go on a fox safari and see the shy foxes from a safe distance (for them). In Glösa, just outside Östersund, the concept of experiencing the Stone Age during the summer in Jämtland Härjedalen is being developed.

See below for news and package examples on the theme the Swedish prescription by Visit Sweden.

New ski lift, more night skiing and gastronomy in Åre ski resort

Åre Ski resort has a brand new ski lift for the 2025/2026 season to create more opportunities to ski between the central part of the ski system and family-friendly Björnen. In addition, there is now lighting in a large part of Björnen to provide the conditions for staying open longer with more evening skiing. A brand new restaurant has opened in the Björnen ski system. The restaurant offers a complete dining experience with lunch, evening menu, après ski and large outdoor seating. In the westernmost part of Åre Ski Resort, Duved, there is a brand new heated cabin for families with packed lunches on the slopes (Skistar Åre).

New ski area in mountain resort Vemdalen

Stage one of the Hovde Syd ski area opened just before Christmas 2025 and covers 11 hectares with a red main slope, several blue slopes and a family-friendly fun park. The area has modern snow production and lighting. In addition, a Snow Park and a Fun Ride are being built for both children and adults. Vemdalen mountain resort has a new ski pass for Klövsjö/Storhogna at a great price (from 395 SEK per day) with access to 16 lifts and 21 slopes in two areas that complement each other perfectly. A great alternative for those who do not need access to all the destination’s ski areas (Skistar Vemdalen).

More activities regardless of weather in vemdalen mountain resort

Puls activities, Multi-activity hall & Flipit trampoline park

In Destination Vemdalen, a new multi-activity hall with sports, games and the so-called Flipittrampoline park opens for more activities all year round for the whole family. There is also the restaurant Björns Kök here to fill up on energy between laps on the trampolines. Puls is the name of the new activity organizer in Vemdalen from winter 2025/26. They offer top tours, Nordic skiing, hiking with a guide, ice fishing and team building for groups and companies.

New fun Parks in Funäsfjällen mountain resort

This winter, Tänndalen’s new park, Trocaparken in Buskvallen, awaits, with a brand new park crew behind the controls. Here, everyone should be able to enjoy themselves, have fun and feel safe, regardless of level or riding style. The park is being built with a focus on playful and well-thought-out features for both snowboarding and skiing, created by a great team led by Micke Dabrowski in collaboration with Snowpark Consulting.

Even more Cross Country skiing trails in Funäsfjällen mountain resort

The trail company of the Funäsfjällen mountains is opening three brand new cross-country skiing trails in Tänndalen this winter. From the new starting point below Ski Lodge Tänndalen, three flat runs of 1.7 km, 2.4 km and 3.5 km start – perfect for the whole family. The trails have been prepared and cleared during the autumn and are part of a larger initiative within Funäsfjällen. They are called Rimfrost trails – with an extra smooth surface that requires minimal snow to be prepared early in the season.

Other cross country skiing destinations in the region with early snow and excellent conditions for cross-country skiing are for example Vålådalen, Lofsdalen and Östersund. Vålådalen’s tracks always open no later than week 44 (Oct/Nov) with well-groomed tracks and here you have the chance to meet both Swedish and foreign elites who come for the good training conditions. Vålådalen’s ski tracks border Trillevallen and Edsåsdalen, which also offer alpine skiing. Lofsdalen in southern Jämtland Härjedalen is known for its cross-country tracks with high quality, great variety and beautiful views. The tracks are wide so that both beginners and professionals feel comfortable. Östersund hosts the start of the World Cup Biathlon and saves snow to be able to kickstart the season in late October each year. Don´t worry if this is an unexplored skill of yours – there are instructors ready to help you become a wizard on skis.

Take a walk along the rivers and lakes or just spend some time quiet in a serene valley.

Recipes for increased existential well-being – Mountain fox safari and try life in the stone age

Guided mountain fox safaris by the wilderness road – we are part of a larger ecological context

Learning about the arctic fox’s role in the ecosystem gives a sense of participation in something bigger than oneself, which strengthens existential well-being. Stekenjokk is the mountain plateau that the Wilderness Road in northern Jämtland Härjedalen passes through during the summer. In winter, the road section over the plateau itself is closed due to too much snow. The arctic fox tours at Lia Ranch started in 2025 and are now being developed further for 2026. They take place in the evening and at a safe distance with powerful binoculars for the greatest opportunity to see the shy foxes without disturbing them. A perfect opportunity for visitors along the Wilderness Road to take part in animals and nature in a sustainable way.

Prehistory provides a sense of context – try stone age life

Glösa Älgriket gives you insights into how Stone Age people may have perceived their time, how they lived, what they ate, how they traveled and what their spiritual life may have been like. The carvings take you back thousands of years and with the new hosts also comes an investment in increased accessibility for more people. Now the carvings can be seen via camera for anyone who cannot get down to them and children and young people can take part in prehistory through school programs where the whole group can dress in Stone Age outfits and try a Stone Age meal cooked in a cooking pit. When we understand how people used to live, hunt and cooperate, our own sense of security and connection grows – we become part of something bigger. By giving everyone the opportunity to take part in the place, both community and well-being are strengthened – history, nature and health in the same experience.

The Potential of Geotourism – Geopark Indalsälven and the dead waterfall

A geopark is a geographical area where geology, landscapes, and cultural heritage are brought together to create experiences that both educate and inspire. In Geopark Indalsälven, you can discover dramatic geological formations, traces of the Ice Age, and unique natural environments along the Ragunda Valley. There are around 30 sites to explore with interpretive signage and guided tours. The most significant site is the dead waterfall, Döda fallet, created by one man in the late 18th century who didn´t know too much about geology and accidentally emptied a whole lake one midsummer night, causing a brand new river to emerge and hence the waterfall got drained. It is possible to book guided tours for groups, adding extra value through storytelling about the landscape’s history and the development of the formations in nature. Recommended guides

The geopark can serve as a unique stop on a roundtrip where geology, nature, and local culture are combined with hiking, accommodation and dining experiences in the area. Why not include Geopark Indalsälven as a stop on a round trip between the High Coast (Höga Kusten) and Adventure Sweden (Jämtland Härjedalen) or Trøndelag (Norway) and Adventure Sweden?
